The Detective, played as Hugin or Munin. What the names mean, and what picking one costs you.

The Silver Palace MC is **the Detective**, the game's one protagonist, and you choose which version
of them you play before the story starts. The male Detective is **Hugin**. The female Detective is **Munin**. Those
are the names the game itself puts on the Character Identity screen, and they are the answer to the
question most people arrive with.

## The two names, and where they come from

| | Hugin | Munin |
| ----------------- | ---------------- | ----------------- |
| Banner | The Raven's Beak | The Raven's Claws |
| Reactor Attribute | Gravitas | Gravitas |
| Combat Style | Striker DPS | Striker DPS |
| Identity | Hero | Hero |
| Weapon | Sword and gun | Sword and gun |

Huginn and Muninn are Odin's two ravens in Norse mythology, and their names translate roughly to
**thought** and **memory**. Every morning they fly out over the world, watch everything, and come
back at dusk to tell Odin what they saw. For a detective that is not a loose thematic echo, it is a
job description, and the raven branding carries through the banners, the faction naming and Munin's
Ultimate, "Thus Spake the Raven". The [name origins breakdown](/blog/silver-palace-character-name-origins-mythology)
works through the rest of the roster the same way.

## What the choice actually changes

Less than you would expect, and more than nothing.

Both builds share their base stats exactly, along with every ability name and every Psyche name.
Their Ultimates land within half a percent of each other. So this is not a strength decision, and
nobody is locked out of content by picking the one they like the look of.

The damage does split, though, and it splits consistently: **Munin is paid for finishing combos and**
**for countering, Hugin for charged attacks and for swapping in.** If you like holding an attack and
committing to it, or rotating the team constantly, Hugin's numbers reward that. If you like running
the full five-hit string and punishing what the enemy throws at you, Munin's do. The per-ability
comparison, derived from the game's own ability data rather than estimated, is on the
[tier list](/guides/tier-list).

## The male Detective was not in the first test

Worth knowing if you read older coverage and came away confused. **Monotype**, the first closed test
in January 2026, shipped the **female Detective only**. The male option arrived with **Dichotomy** in
July 2026, the same build that took the roster from 7 playable characters to 15 and added the
structured interrogation system. Anything written before July that says the protagonist is a woman
was accurate at the time and is not any more.

## Who the Detective is

The setup is the same whichever you pick. The Detective left Silvernia three years ago, after a
disaster, and has now come back to a city where conspiracies fester under a surface of peace, with a
fragile justice system and noble politics nobody can see into. They are rational, reliable and
efficient, built around observation and analysis, and they are driven by loss: the thing they are
actually chasing is the truth behind the death of someone they loved.

Alongside that, the game's title-page reveals introduce a pair of detectives at S.T.A.T.S., a
younger brother and an elder sister, once the city's most distinguished investigators, who both
vanished three years ago in an airship crash tied to the Queen's assassination. The
[Raven's Beak and Raven's Claws breakdown](/blog/silver-palace-ravens-beak-claws-detective-duo)
covers what those cards confirm, and the [story recap](/blog/silver-palace-story-recap) covers the
campaign as it stood at the end of the Dichotomy build.

## Where to go next

Full kits, Psyche trees, best Implements and team pairings live on the two character pages:
[Hugin](/characters/hugin) and [Munin](/characters/munin). If you have not picked yet, read both and
choose on playstyle, because that is genuinely the only thing the decision costs you.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the MC's name in Silver Palace?

The main character is the Detective, and the two versions are named Hugin and Munin on the in-game
Character Identity screen. Hugin is the male Detective and carries the banner The Raven's Beak;
Munin is the female Detective and carries The Raven's Claws. The names come from Huginn and Muninn,
the two ravens of Odin in Norse mythology, whose names mean thought and memory.

### Can you play as a male or female main character in Silver Palace?

Yes. You pick the male or female Detective at the start of the game, and both are fully playable.
This was not always true: the first closed test, Monotype in January 2026, shipped the female
Detective only. The male option arrived with the Dichotomy test in July 2026, which is also where
the roster grew from 7 playable characters to 15.

### Is Hugin or Munin better?

Neither is stronger overall. They share their base stats exactly, along with every ability name and
Psyche name, and their Ultimates land within half a percent of each other. What differs is where the
damage sits: Munin is paid for finishing combos and for countering, Hugin for charged attacks and
for swapping in. The per-ability numbers are on the tier list.

### Are Hugin and Munin the same character?

They are the two builds of the same protagonist, the Detective, and you play one of them. The lore
also introduces a detective pair at S.T.A.T.S., a younger brother and an elder sister who were the
city's most distinguished investigators until they vanished three years ago in an airship crash tied
to the Queen's assassination. The raven branding runs through both framings.

### What is the Silver Palace protagonist's story?

The Detective left Silvernia three years ago after a disaster and has come back to a city where
conspiracies sit under a surface of peace. They are rational and efficient, built around observation
and analysis, and driven by loss: the search is for the truth behind the death of someone they cared
about. Both builds share that setup.
