Outlaw's Determination

In-game item text, all 4 tiers

  1. Faded Dagger

That ancient principle of retribution: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

  2. Hardy Dagger

It channels the destructive rage and ambitions that smoulder deep in the heart, manifesting them into reality.

  3. Indestructible Dagger

Among the pages of Musings on Anatomical Dissection lies a single handwritten note by an unknown hand: "An incision beneath the windpipe, made from right to left, proves most efficacious; the subject is thereby rendered incapable of raising the alarm." The authorities endeavoured to trace the reader who had borrowed this tome, yet their inquiries came to naught.

  4. Bloodstained Dagger

What's done is done, it would seem. Don't forget to tie up those loose ends.

Every Identity in Silver Palace has a domain that drops its ascension material. The Outlaw's is called Outlaw's Determination, and it pays out daggers. Four of them, one per tier.

The first three tiers of most ladders are throat-clearing. This one is not.

Read them in order

Tier one gives you the principle: an eye for an eye. Tier two turns the principle into an appetite, rage and ambition made physical.

Then tier three stops being abstract entirely. It quotes a handwritten note found in the margins of a library copy of Musings on Anatomical Dissection, giving a specific incision below the windpipe, right to left, chosen because it leaves the subject unable to raise the alarm. The note closes by recording that the authorities tried to trace who had borrowed the book, and failed.

Tier four is four words of aftermath. What is done is done, and do not forget the loose ends.

What the game just did

That is a complete crime, told backwards through a drop table. Motive, method, the paper trail, the cover-up. The investigation happened, and it went nowhere, and the record of it survives only as a note in the margin of a library book that somebody returned.

It is also, quietly, a joke at the player's expense. You are a detective. This case is sitting in your inventory, four copies deep, and the interface will only ever tell you it is used for Potential Breaks.

Whether it connects to anything

It is tempting to attach this to a character. Resist that. Nothing in the four texts names anyone, and the site does not publish attributions the game has not made. What the ladder does establish is that the Outlaw Identity is not styled as a rogue or a rebel in the material the game attaches to it. It is styled as someone who kills carefully and is not caught.

That is a sharper reading of the Identity than anything on its glossary entry, and it comes from four items nobody reads.
