Combat Styles & Identities

战斗风格与身份

Combat Style is the gameplay role. Identity links personality, Motives, and upgrade materials. Reactor Attribute is the damage type. Three separate systems, one character.

Based on Beta & Expo Preview Footage

Silver Palace tags every character with three separate systems, and reading them as one thing is the single most common early mistake. This guide keeps them apart. Combat Style is the character's actual gameplay role, the filter that tells you what they do in a fight. Reactor Attribute is their damage type. Identity is a personality category that links characters to compatible Motive effects and upgrade materials. A character carries one value from each at the same time, and none of the three decides the others.

If you want the roster applied to these systems character by character, see the companion post: every character's Combat Style and Identity. For the mechanics behind how Reactor Attributes feed damage, the Resonance guide and Reactor Attributes & Combat Styles go deeper.

Quick Answer

Combat Style is the gameplay role system, with five values: Resonance DPS, Striker DPS, Break Suppressor, Combat Support, and Survival & Healing. It is separate from Reactor Attribute (the damage type: seven confirmed) and separate again from Identity (the personality and Motive category: six confirmed). Relying on Identity alone to guess a character's job does not work, because Identity is not the role filter. Combat Style is.

Three systems, one character

System What it tells you Confirmed values
Reactor Attribute Damage type 7: Ignis, Glacies, Fulmen, Gravitas, Radiatio, Ferrugo, Alba
Combat Style Battlefield role 5: Resonance DPS, Striker DPS, Break Suppressor, Combat Support, Survival & Healing
Identity Personality, Motive compatibility, and upgrade materials 6: Hero, Guardian, Outlaw, Victim, Saviour, Witness

Combat Style: the five roles

Combat Style is the game's real gameplay role filter, shown on the character Details screen. The labels below are the current in-game English UI wording. Earlier expo footage used a slightly different set of translations for the same five roles, shown in the middle column so older guides still line up.

Icon Combat Style Earlier translation What it does
Resonance DPS Resonator Output Deals damage by cashing in on the team's Resonance Effects
Striker DPS Striker Output Deals damage through its own skills, independent of team resonance
Break Suppressor Break Oppressor Builds up Stuns and breaks enemy poise
Combat Support Combat Vanguard Provides powerful buffs to allies
Survival & Healing Survival Healer Heals or shields allies

The split worth understanding is Resonance DPS versus Striker DPS. Both are damage roles, but the game separates damage that comes from Resonance Effects from damage that comes from a character's own skills. A Resonance DPS is built to cash in on the Resonance Effects that fire when an attribute's meter fills on the enemy; a Striker DPS deals damage regardless of what the rest of the team is running. Break Suppressor, Combat Support, and Survival & Healing map cleanly onto the familiar stagger, buffer, and healer roles.

Identity: six personality categories

Identity lists six personality categories. The descriptions read as story archetypes rather than battlefield jobs, but Identity also has progression effects. A character's Identity determines which category of Motive grants its special effect to that character. It also determines the materials required for that character's skill upgrades and Motive Potential Break.

Icon Identity Description
Hero One who leads with influence and shoulders the burden of difficult decisions
Guardian One who guards a lifelong ideal with fierce devotion, willing to destroy anything that dares threaten what is sacred
Outlaw One driven by powerful ambition and an impulse for destruction, who would do anything to accomplish a goal
Victim One trapped by memories and unable to give up the past, who must also face sacrifice and departure
Saviour One who possesses the wisdom to defy death, betray a predetermined fate, and bear the price that follows
Witness One who observes, witnesses, records, and narrates everything to pass the story on

There is no Victim character in CBT2. Victim Motives are available, however, and CBT2 includes the corresponding stage for obtaining Victim materials.

Because Identity is decoupled from Combat Style, there is no clean mapping between the two. In the current preview roster the three Witnesses are all Combat Support, but Saviours and Guardians each split across two different Combat Styles. This is why reading a name like Hero as "the damage class" stopped working the moment the roster grew past the first few characters.

Reactor Attribute: the seven attributes

The third system is the Reactor Attribute, which decides a character's damage type and their eligibility for Resonance Effects. Seven Reactor Attributes are confirmed, each described in the codex as a way of converting Silverium into a damage-dealing state.

Icon Reactor Attribute What an activated Reactor does
Fulmen Reactor Attribute icon Fulmen Converts Silverium into highly conductive magnetofluid, dealing Fulmen DMG
Ignis Reactor Attribute icon Ignis Converts Silverium into super-heated combustible gel, dealing Ignis DMG
Glacies Reactor Attribute icon Glacies Converts Silverium into ultra-cold condensate, dealing Glacies DMG
Gravitas Reactor Attribute icon Gravitas Converts Silverium into a concentrated dark-matter halo, dealing Gravitas DMG
Radiatio Reactor Attribute icon Radiatio Converts Silverium into unstable radioactive material, dealing Radiatio DMG
Alba Reactor Attribute icon Alba Converts Silverium into stable pure-phase matter, dealing Alba DMG
Ferrugo Reactor Attribute icon Ferrugo Converts contaminated Silverium into an excited state, dealing Ferrugo DMG

Alba gained playable carriers in Cynthia II and Gucia. Ferrugo is the one attribute still without a playable character, so Purification is the one Resonance Effect you cannot trigger. For the deeper theory on how these interact, see the Catalyst Attribute reactor breakdown.

How they fit together

Reactor Attribute decides damage type and Resonance eligibility. Combat Style decides the job a character does in a fight. Identity describes a character's personality while determining compatible Motive effects and upgrade materials. To build a team, filter by Combat Style first (you want damage, a stun-builder, a buffer, and sustain covered), then use Reactor Attribute to line up your Resonance bonuses. Check Identity when selecting Motives or farming materials, but do not use it to infer a character's combat role. The Tier List can help you decide which characters are worth investing in first, and the Motive Database covers the gear linked to each Identity.

What's still unconfirmed

Silver Palace is still pre-release, so treat this as the confirmed shape of the systems as of CBT2, not a locked spec. Terminology, icons, and role assignments can all shift before launch. In particular, whether Ferrugo gains a playable character, whether Victim gains a playable character, and whether more Combat Style roles or Identity values exist beyond what the filter screen showed are still open.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Combat Style in Silver Palace?

Combat Style is the game's gameplay role filter, shown on the character Details screen. It has five values: Resonance DPS, Striker DPS, Break Suppressor, Combat Support, and Survival & Healing.

Is Identity the same thing as Combat Style?

No. Identity (Hero, Guardian, Outlaw, Victim, Saviour, Witness) is a personality category that determines compatible Motive effects and upgrade materials. Combat Style is the separate role filter that decides what a character does in a fight.

Why do Combat Style names differ between guides?

Earlier expo footage used the translations Resonator Output, Striker Output, Break Oppressor, Combat Vanguard, and Survival Healer. Newer in-game footage shows the labels as Resonance DPS, Striker DPS, Break Suppressor, Combat Support, and Survival & Healing. They refer to the same five roles.

How many Reactor Attributes are there?

Seven are confirmed: Ignis, Glacies, Fulmen, Gravitas, Radiatio, Alba, and Ferrugo. Six of those have playable characters in the current roster; only Ferrugo does not.
