In-game item text

  1. Ounce

"An ounce buys flowers, an ounce buys oblivion; after an ounce of pain comes an ounce of sweetness. It never stays in anyone's hands for long... It flows onward, never stopping."

Ounce is the currency almost every system in Silver Palace spends, and the thing you will hold more of than anything else. It sits at the top of the bag from the first hour and never leaves.

Most currencies in this genre get a functional line. This one gets a poem.

The line itself

It sets money against three pairs, flowers and oblivion, pain and sweetness, and then refuses to let it settle anywhere. An ounce never stays in anyone's hands for long. It flows onward and does not stop.

Read that next to the rest of the game and it stops being decoration. Silvernia runs on a substance that is mined, refined, spent and returned to the Argent Strand, which is the one cycle the setting keeps coming back to. The currency description is that cycle in miniature, applied to money instead of to Silverium.

Why it is worth pointing at

The game had an easy option here. "The standard currency of Silvernia, used for upgrades and purchases" would have done the job, and it is what the tier-one materials around it settle for.

Instead the writer treated the most-touched object in the game as the place to say something about what money does to people, and then filed it where a player would see it while sorting a bag. That is a choice, and it is the kind of choice worth noticing before the game launches and the description panel becomes something you close reflexively.

Ounce drops from Daily Routine, Info Exchange, Cognito Assembly and City Events, which is to say from nearly everything. It flows onward, as advertised.
