Cynthia II: Who Is She, Really?

Cynthia II is the easiest character in Silver Palace to file and forget. House Luna's Goldbud, a cousin of Queen Feliana, a small blonde aristocrat who collects cat plushies and hires the Detective to find three missing pets. Her card art stages a nursery. Her weapon is a slingshot that fires sweets.

Then, late in her own chapter, a merchant baron who has just committed a kidnapping looks straight past her and says this:

"Did you fall and hurt your head? She is a daughter of the Lunas. Do you think she would deign to care about a few dead commoners?"

He is talking about a girl standing a few feet behind him, and it is the last confident thing he says. Cynthia is first in line to the throne of Silvernia. She has spent the whole day and half the night watching him. And Silver Palace has been telling you what that combination is worth since her character screen loaded, because her Identity in the character system is Witness. Not healer. Not guardian. Witness.

Read her quest with that one word held in mind and it stops being a story about missing cats.

Silver Palace's Cynthia II of House Luna sizing up the Detective at their first meeting on the cafe terrace, saying so this is the one

The client Rex has to bow to

Her quest is called The New Moon's Secret Friends, and it opens with Chief Inspector Lorin trying to hand somebody else a problem. He does not sell the case. He sells the client, in the flattest voice available.

"Hardly a big case, but the client is, as you so bluntly put it, a big one. Came marching in this morning, demanded to see Rex, and said everyone had to attend to her business post haste."

Superintendent Rex, the man who confiscates corpses and lectures bankers about statutes, came within a whisker of blowing his top and then did as he was told. For the measure of how rare that is, the case for Rex is worth reading before you decide who bent first. Then Lorin gives the answer.

"The one from House Luna. Her Majesty's cousin. Young, not yet part of society circles and mostly unknown, but a woman of royalty nonetheless. Technically speaking, she's even first in line to the throne."

Sit with that sentence, because it usually gets quoted and then dropped. Queen Auguria reigned about twelve years and was assassinated. Feliana took the crown three years ago as a child, with the Prime Minister ruling as regent until he resigned. Silvernia is a country that lost one monarch to murder and handed the next one a throne she was too young for. And the name directly behind the current queen belongs to a girl nobody has met.

Here is that girl, thirty seconds before her first meeting with a commoner:

"Why aren't they here yet? Oh dear, they're here. I hardly feel up to the task of speaking to a commoner. How should I behave around them?"

Moira coaches her through it like a recital. Retain your noble bearing. Recall our etiquette lessons. Cynthia composes herself, admits the Detective in, looks them over and delivers her verdict.

"So, this is the one. I don't see anything particularly impressive."

Moira then recounts the Detective's career at length, and Cynthia, entirely forgetting the noble bearing, asks how it ended. Did the detectives live happily ever after. She is a child who has been handed a case file and cannot stop treating it as a bedtime story.

Then the request lands, and it is almost embarrassing next to the build-up. Twelve cats vanished from the family estate in Pretton just after midnight. The family guild recovered most of them. She wants the last three.

The Detective tries to turn it down.

"Why is it always cats? Do you know just how many people want me to look for their cats every week? Such work tends to be time-consuming and yields little recompense. I am rather hard-pressed for funds, so I respectfully suggest you seek someone else."

Moira came prepared. The household looked up the average reward for feline retrieval in the High Peers and is offering ten times it. That is the whole negotiation: a cat job the Detective did not want, taken for the money, from a client who will turn out to own the building the Detective cannot afford to keep.

That is House Luna in miniature. It is also the house that built the thing you ride around Silvernia in. A trade fair barker at the Toroid Spine credits House Luna with making the Silverium Pegasus prototype public, and says the decision was political: air power was blamed for a past tragedy, so House Luna opened up its flight technology and took air superiority off House Ventice. The house is not decorative nobility. It is an aviation power that happens to have a child at the front of the succession.

What a Witness actually does

Skip the middle of the day, because the full story recap already walks it beat by beat: the residents who point the way, the cat retrieved off a live conduit, the shy girl on the corner who offers a lead, the row with Moira after dark, the warehouse, the werewolf. What matters for this argument is where everyone ends up standing at the end of it.

Silver Palace's Cynthia II leaning over the unconscious werewolf girl held inside the disused guild warehouse and telling her they are here to save her

Barton first turns up at the clinic to hand Fifiana back and explain himself, and his story is tidy. The girl's father was his guild's bookkeeper and treasurer, the family were werewolves hiding in the High Peers, they embezzled a fortune and tried to vanish, the father did not survive, and the missing funds are tied to the daughter, who slipped a pocket watch onto a passing stray while being apprehended. Bad luck for everyone that the stray turned out to be Fifiana, a pampered white house cat with green eyes belonging to Lady Cynthia. Firtho throws him out. Moira takes Cynthia home. Barton comes back, breaks in and takes the girl anyway.

The street confrontation that follows is where the chapter puts its cards down. The Detective takes the embezzlement story apart using things overheard rather than things deduced: the two men on the warehouse door had already complained that trade was dying on its feet and the boss was laying people off, the guild office looked like a moth-eaten warehouse, and the loyal employees had been grumbling about not being paid.

"Look at the company you keep. A guild backed by aristocrats, but you hire people who look like common thugs. Even his loyal employees have long complained of their mistreatment. I wonder, does the Baron truly intend to pay you lot as promised?"

"There was never any embezzlement to begin with. Am I right?"

Correct, and completely useless. Barton does not even bother denying it. He laughs, agrees, and points out that the Detective is the one with nowhere to run, because a private investigator's reconstruction does not survive contact with a baron's word and both of them know it.

So the Detective plays the only card that beats a title.

"Don't forget, Lady Cynthia bore witness to everything as well. Even if you silence me, you will never be safe."

That is the argument of the entire chapter, spoken out loud by the person who solved the case, about somebody else. The deduction is not what saves anyone. The deduction plus a witness whose word outranks a baron's is. And Barton, offered one chance to take it seriously, makes the worst call of his night.

She had been standing behind him for the last minute.

Silver Palace's Cynthia II telling Baron Barton of the Crescent Guild that she will pay the Queen a visit tomorrow afternoon and strip him of his title

What she does next is the part worth studying, because she does not do the thing a shonen protagonist does. She does not draw. She thanks him.

"I've kept asking myself what is right and what is wrong, why good people end up at odds with one another. Then lo and behold, you appear: a wonderfully uncomplicated villain. With you, there is no nuance, no need to think. So I have made up my mind. I shall pay my dear sister a visit tomorrow afternoon, and strip you of your title!"

Tomorrow afternoon. She schedules it. Moira has already read out the diary: ballet at eight, then tea, then Her Majesty. A day of watching the city has left Cynthia with exactly one conclusion and she slots the consequences in between appointments.

That "dear sister" is worth flagging, by the way. Elementa's own drip marketing calls Feliana "her cousin, the Queen," and the royal family tree records the relation as cousin on that basis. The subtitle in her own chapter says sister. Both readings survive if "sister" is affection rather than genealogy, which is the likeliest answer for a house that sits inside the extended royal family. Keep the question open until something confirms it either way.

Somewhere in the same breath she also disposes of the thing Barton was banking on:

"The dignity and trust of the nobility. It isn't quite as priceless as people claim it to be."

Barton's response is to promise that none of them are leaving alive, which is how a debt problem becomes attempted murder of the heir presumptive in front of her governess. He loses that fight and he was always going to.

Now go and look at her kit, because Elementa built the same idea into it twice. Testers in the first closed beta read Witness as a healer tag and went hunting for a heal that does not exist, a confusion that the Combat Style and Identity roster has been untangling ever since. Cynthia II has no healing. She has no meaningful personal damage either. Every number in her kit lives on the far side of the fight or on somebody else's character sheet.

Sweetness Overload does not make your carry stronger. It makes the target take 10% more from everyone, and 17.5% once Rising Crescent is on. Crescent Compassion does not kill anything; it throws a boomerang that drags a crowd into one place and holds them there, and it keeps spinning after she has left the field. The Captured Moon hands the whole team 20% ATK after that Ultimate. Moon Freed From Mortal Dust hands them 15% All-Attribute damage after her Tactical Assault.

She makes other people's blows land, and what she starts keeps working when she is not in the room. That is a description of her Ultimate and it is also, exactly, what happens to Barton's title the following afternoon. The build guide covers where that puts her on an actual team.

Sir Toast is the knight she was refused

Earlier that night, before any of the horror, a biker gang makes the mistake of blocking a dark street. Cynthia's reaction to being menaced by armed men is to be delighted about it.

"Punishing the wicked is a noble's duty! I've never even met any bad guys before, but I've always wanted a proper, honourable duel."

The Detective flattens them in about four seconds. Cynthia, who has never seen a fight, is incandescent.

"Magnificent. You faced them all alone and sent them sprawling just like a knight from the old legends. When I'm of age, will you be my sworn knight and protect me always?"

Silver Palace's Cynthia II telling the Detective they faced the biker gang alone and sent them sprawling just like a knight from the old legends

The Detective says no.

Not cruelly. Almost absently, while still cataloguing what the thugs let slip: a knight of the legends would not have laboured that long over a handful of street ruffians, and the title of detective suits them far better. The scene moves on within seconds. Cynthia never brings it up again.

Her Passive is called Toast's Lament. Whenever she is about to take a hit, a plush slice of toast with cat ears and a red scarf, Sir Toast, takes it in her place, and then he has to rest for ten seconds before he can do it again. Her official title page draws him in the bottom right corner, slumped in a cardboard box with a sweat drop, recovering from the job the passive describes. Her weapon is a Kitty Knights boomerang slingshot. Knights, plural. She has a whole order of them and every one is a toy.

She asked a person to be her sworn knight and was politely turned down mid-adoration. So the knight in her kit is one she made herself, out of bread, and the game files it under Lament.

The moon ladder

House Luna is not subtle about what it is. Her drip copy calls her "the shining new moon of House Luna," which is a strange compliment when you think about it, because a new moon is the one you cannot see.

Then recall the name on the quest tracker. The New Moon's Secret Friends. Elementa put the reading in the mission title before you ever meet her.

After the warehouse, sitting outside Firtho's clinic while a werewolf girl is stitched up inside, Cynthia asks the question the whole chapter has been building to. Why must we dislike one another. Am I simply too foolish to see the truth. It will take years and years for me to grow up, long years, dark and cold as the Silver Palace's corridors at night, and the thought frightens me.

The Detective answers in the same register she asked in.

"Every new moon is followed closely by a long night. But you are not alone."

"Once your heart is as bright as a full moon, shine your light across the skies so that those below will no longer fear the dark."

Then look at her six psyches in order. This is a reading rather than a confirmed design note, but the sequence is hard to unsee once you have played the quest.

Psyche Where it lands in the quest
Rising Crescent The new moon of House Luna, mostly unknown, first in line, out of the house for the first time.
To the Moonlit Court The appointment she makes with the Queen, and the only threat she ever needs to make.
The Captured Moon Curfew, ballet at eight, tea with Her Majesty, a governess at her shoulder in every scene.
Lone Lunar Shadow The night she dismisses Moira, refuses to go home and walks into an unlit district anyway.
Moon Freed From Mortal Dust The morning after, with a baron's title spent and her own mind made up.
Moonbound Howl The werewolf.

Moonbound Howl is the tell. Five of the six psyche names are about her, and the sixth is about a wolf, and it is also the one that makes her uninterruptible and pulls enemies together while she holds her ground. The girl who was told all her life that werewolves deserve death has a psyche named after one.

There is a second joke buried in the Ultimate. Barton's company is the Crescent Guild, a crescent moon worn as a business badge by a man whose business is failing. Cynthia's Ultimate is Crescent Compassion. She takes the crescent off him and it is not even the main event of her evening.

What it cost her

The morning after, Moira has some accounting to report.

"But I am duty bound to remind you that these stabilisers were acquired at a considerable expense. You have already exhausted your allowance for the month. Every single penny."

One hundred crates of werewolf stabilizers, ordered for a girl she met twice, one of those times at the wrong end of a transformation. Cynthia's entire monthly allowance, gone. Her response is that this is not a problem at all, she will simply stay at home for the next fortnight, which for a child who spent the previous day begging to be allowed outside is the whole character in one shrug.

Which leaves her unable to pay the Detective. She asks, with genuine politeness, whether it might be possible to wait until next month. The Detective, who has rent due next Wednesday and a landlord out of patience, tells her next month is too late. And then:

"Detective, where is that office of yours?"
"Three Morgue Street."
"Heh, Detective! This office of yours, or rather, the entire street belongs to me!"

Silver Palace's Cynthia II setting the condition on the Detective's rent waiver, that she must be their first priority whenever she comes to visit

The landlord was never a person. He is a trustee, because Cynthia is not of age, and the street he administers is hers. She waives the Detective's rent permanently on the spot. If you want the geography of what she just gave away, the districts map and the Morgue Street guide cover the enclave that holds the office, the Memoir Bar and the Voicepipe Cafe.

The waiver has a condition.

"The condition is you have to continue playing with me in the future. As long as I come to visit, you're not to turn me away. I have to be your first priority. Have I made myself clear, my good friend?"

She owns a street and she cannot buy an afternoon, so she writes the afternoon into a contract, because a contract is the only instrument anyone has ever taught her to use. Note that she had already made her decision hours earlier, in the dark on Mist Lane, with nothing at stake and nothing known about the rent: I hereby proclaim you my good friend. The paperwork came second.

Now read her title page quote again, the one that gets clipped into every character trailer thread:

"May I ask your wages, Detective? I'd quite like to pay them for you, if you'd just stay with me and play!"

That is not a rich kid bragging. That is the deal she actually signed, quoted back at you by the marketing team, and it is a lonelier line than it looks.

Moira, and what she used to be

One loose thread, left deliberately hanging.

Silver Palace's Moira, labeled Royal Etiquette Instructor in game, the governess who chaperones Cynthia II through the whole case

The game labels her Royal Etiquette Instructor in every dialogue box, which is the sort of job title that sounds complete until you watch her work. When the fighting starts, Moira does not hide behind anyone. The Detective notices, and asks.

"I see you can handle yourself in a fight."
"I am but a governess who teaches noble etiquette."
"You move well for an etiquette instructor. Were you perhaps an..."
"That was but in another life. Nothing worth boasting of."

She changes the subject immediately and the game lets her. In the same conversation she says something no employee usually says out loud: that she may be too narrow-minded to give her charge what she needs any longer, and that Cynthia needs the world outside more than she needs another etiquette lesson.

Somebody put a woman with that skill set next to the first name in the line of succession and dressed the arrangement up as deportment classes. The story does not say who, or what she was before, and the cast roundup has no more on her than you do.

The verdict

Barton looked at Cynthia II and saw a title. He was not wrong about the title. He was wrong that it was the dangerous part.

The dangerous part was that she had spent the previous twelve hours learning names. A woman on a doorstep who kept an eye out for her cats. A cat lady who fed strays and knew which way animals wander. A bystander who said they would have made the climb themselves twenty years ago. A shy girl on a corner who gave her a lead and later tried to tear her throat out because somebody had beaten her half to death first. By the time Barton asked whether a Luna would care about a few dead commoners, the question had already been answered, out loud, on a street he had never walked down.

She is filed as a support who never touches a health bar. She is filed, more precisely, as a Witness. Her whole kit is built to make things land harder and to keep working after she has left the field, and in the one story the beta gives her, that is exactly what she is: not the person who solves it, and not the person who wins the fight, but the one whose presence made the truth stick. Her character page will tell you she is a 5-star Alba Combat Support. The chapter tells you what that means.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Cynthia II in Silver Palace?

Cynthia II is the young scion of House Luna, styled "The Goldbud" and "Luna's Scion," and a cousin of Queen Feliana. In the Dichotomy beta she is both the Detective's client and, unknown to them until the final scene, their landlady, since she owns the whole of Morgue Street through a trustee. In combat she is a 5-star Alba Combat Support with the Witness Identity.

Is Cynthia II really first in line to the throne?

Yes, according to Chief Inspector Lorin. Briefing the Detective on the case, he describes her as Her Majesty's cousin, young and mostly unknown, and adds that "technically speaking, she's even first in line to the throne." Silvernia's previous queen, Auguria, was assassinated, and Feliana took the crown as a child, so the line of succession is not an idle detail in this setting.

What happens in Cynthia II's story quest?

The quest is called The New Moon's Secret Friends. Twelve of her cats vanish from the family estate in Pretton and she hires the Detective to recover the last three. The search leads to a biker gang, a disused guild warehouse and a beaten werewolf girl, and then to Baron Barton of the Crescent Guild, who framed a werewolf family for embezzlement to cover his own collapsing business. Cynthia witnesses the confrontation and announces she will have Barton's title stripped. The full sequence is in the story recap.

Who is Moira in Silver Palace?

Moira is Cynthia II's governess, an etiquette instructor who chaperones her through the entire case and repeatedly warns her against commoners. She also fights competently when the clinic is attacked, and when the Detective asks what she used to be, she answers only that it was "in another life" and not worth boasting of. The game does not explain further.

Is Cynthia II a healer?

No. The Witness Identity is not a healer tag, and there is no healing anywhere in her kit. Her value is crowd control and amplification: Sweetness Overload raises the damage enemies take, Crescent Compassion pulls them together and persists after she swaps out, and her psyches hand the rest of the team ATK and All-Attribute damage bonuses.

What does the Witness Identity mean for Cynthia II?

Mechanically it marks her as a support who works through debuffs and team buffs rather than direct output or healing. Narratively the label reads as deliberate: in her own chapter her decisive contribution is that she saw what happened, and a baron's account cannot survive her testimony. Identity is a separate axis from Combat Style and Reactor Attribute, which the identity roster breaks down in full.
